Game Show Raised $175,000 for Greenville County Schools

August 22nd, 2010

Television game shows such as Family Feud, Jeopardy, Deal or no Deal, Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader, and Who Wants To be A Millionaire have been a huge hit in many households for years. These shows have brought excitement, anticipation and sometimes laughter at their silly antics and wit. They have also brought frustration when a contestant that we would dearly love to win fails to accomplish a challenge or answer a question.

What makes television game shows a hit is that they enable a viewer to feel as if he or she is the participant in the show, as if he or she is the contestant.  When a contestant is asked a question, we, the viewers also answer. And if we happen to know the answer and the contestant doesn’t, we throw our hands up in disgust and shout the correct answer as if our shout will be heard by the contestant. Then if a contestant is faced with the dilemma to continue the game or take the money being offered, we also make a decision as if we are the one in the contest.

Due to the popularity of television game shows, game shows are sometimes used for fundraising events as they draw in a lot of participants and big audiences. Sometimes they pattern the fundraising on one of the popular game shows or they make their own fundraising game with its own set of rules.

One such fundraiser was patterned after Are You Smarter than A 5th Grade. The funds are being raised for Greenville County Schools – for supplies that the schools need. The fundraiser game show is fittingly called “Are You Smarter than A Greenville County Schools Fifth Grader?”

The fundraiser game show was able to raise more than $175,000. It’s success was due to the people who have helped organize this event and those who have participated in it. Sponsors include Michelin, Scan Source, Erwin-Penland and Greenville Hospital System. The full list of sponsors can be found at www.HelpSmartKids.com.
